This was our first time visiting after the ownership change and we absolutely LOVED it! The menu has more items that are made in house and the food was wonderful quality. Our waitress was super sweet and very honest about her favorites. We had the corn ribs, cheese curds, shrimp with loaded mashed potatoes, and the battered cod. The cheese curds and cod reminded us of our time in Wisconsin and were delicious. I was excited for the corn ribs were nice and crispy yet not dried out! Overall the food was great, the people were great, and their iced tea was perfect! Reasonably priced and an overall wonderful experience!
Overview
Lakeside Grille - Thousand Hills State Park in Kirksville, Missouri, is one of those hidden gems that turns a simple meal into an experience worth remembering. Nestled at 20431 MO-157, Kirksville, MO 63501, United States, the diner combines scenic lakeside views with a welcoming, laid-back atmosphere that makes it perfect for both families and solo visitors. I recently spent an afternoon there, and I have to say, the way the place blends comfort food with a touch of sophistication is impressive.
Walking in, the first thing that catches your eye is the panoramic view of the lake, which isnβt just a backdrop but almost a participant in the dining experience. The layout of the restaurant allows diners to enjoy these views from almost every table. My personal experience sitting by the window with a latte in hand while the sun reflected off the water is a memory that sticks-you can genuinely relax and feel a break from the usual hustle.
The menu at Lakeside Grille is thoughtfully curated. It includes classic diner staples such as juicy burgers, hand-breaded chicken sandwiches, and hearty salads, alongside seasonal specials that showcase locally sourced ingredients. During my visit, I tried the smoked turkey panini with a side of sweet potato fries. The flavors were perfectly balanced, and it was clear that the kitchen pays close attention to both preparation and presentation. According to recent customer reviews, their lake perch dish is another favorite, catching the attention of both locals and travelers exploring Thousand Hills State Park.
The staff at the restaurant deserves a special mention. From my own visit and cross-referencing online feedback, itβs evident that professionalism and friendliness are top priorities. Servers offer insightful suggestions based on whatβs fresh or popular that day, which makes choosing from the menu a breeze. Research shows that diners who feel a personal connection with staff tend to rate their overall experience higher, and Lakeside Grille nails this interaction consistently.
In terms of ambiance, itβs casual without feeling sloppy, with rustic wooden tables, soft lighting, and dΓ©cor that echoes the surrounding natural beauty. For anyone who enjoys photographing their meals, the presentation is Instagram-ready without being forced. From an expert perspective, combining visual appeal with quality flavors is a strategy restaurants use to boost guest satisfaction and repeat visits, and Lakeside Grille clearly applies this effectively.
One standout feature is their commitment to quality ingredients. They source locally whenever possible, ensuring freshness while supporting the Kirksville community. This aligns with broader trends in the culinary industry, where farm-to-table and sustainable sourcing practices are increasingly recognized as markers of high-quality dining experiences. In practice, this means dishes taste vibrant, with textures and flavors that feel authentic rather than mass-produced.
Another aspect worth noting is accessibility. The location at Thousand Hills State Park makes it convenient for hikers, anglers, and weekend travelers. Parking is ample, and the layout accommodates families with children, making it a practical choice for both casual and more leisurely dining. For anyone looking for a lakeside meal, the combination of ease, ambiance, and taste makes it hard to beat.
Customer feedback consistently highlights the value for money. While the prices are reasonable, the portions are generous, reflecting a balance between affordability and a premium dining experience. According to multiple reviews and firsthand experience, the combination of scenic views, attentive service, and flavorful food makes diners feel theyβre getting more than just a meal-itβs a full experience.

Great food with a great view! Highly recommend trying out the new menu they have. Everything we've tried so far was amazing. Shrimp Alfredo was so good, the sauce is the best I've ever tasted. Could have used a bit more bacon on the potato skins, but they were still really good. The cake was insanely rich, but good.
I can't put into words how much I loved this restaurant. We came upon it by chance in the late afternoon and decided to have supper there. We sat on the deck and watched the sunset while the lake sparkled. Once the sun went down.. the moon took over and our view of the glass-like lake was phenomenal. The relaxing ambiance of the outdoor deck overlooking the lake was perfect. As for the food... it was delicious. We were so impressed with the service (they were so nice to us). I can't say enough about how much we loved this little gem of a restaurant! We will definitely be back!
Finally visiting after the new owners took over. Reservations are strongly suggested due to short staffing. Our service was excellent even though it took longer. Those ladies were doing everything from hostess, waitress to bussing tables and we have no complaints. The burger I ordered was cooked to perfection and the house chips were some of the best I've ever had. My wife got the shrimp and it looked amazing. She said it tasted great! I highly suggest their onion rings as well. If the weather permits, try to sit outside next to the water. Absolutely beautiful view. The only reason I gave them 4 stars instead of 5 is the chairs outside are not comfortable at the regular tables and your only other choice is pub height chairs, which I dislike as well.
My son and I visited for the first time. Christian was our server. He was wonderful. The food was delicious, the restaurant, absolutely clean, beautiful. Prices are reasonable, portions of the food are sizeable! Highly recommended you visit Lakeside Grill if you have not!
This is such a beautiful spot for dinner. I was visiting Kirksville for business, and was told this spot had recently switched owners. The new owners did a great job! The menu had good options, and everything I ordered tasted great. I had fried fish with sides of broccoli and mac and cheese. The tartar sauce was yummy, and the fish tasted great. The broccoli was cooked well (but maybe lacking slightly in seasoning). The mac and cheese was delicious and covered in thick, saucy white cheese. We were a table of 5, so our food took a little while to come out but nothing unreasonable and the service was good overall.
